November 5th, 2006:
Leaving at 5am from Loreto was one of our best ideas so far. Like the title “Sierra De La Giganta” promised, it was waiting for us with its 30km of uphill. Yeah a little 30km that took us 4 and a half hours! But leaving at 5am allowed us to be in the cool air in the morning, missing the 35 Celsius since 12pm… thank god for alarm clocks. On that same day we came upon our new furry 12 legged little friend…the tarantula. The concern with these creatures is that every time we encounter one they get bigger and bigger. To be honest I am not sure what scares me most the tarantulas or the bears…you can see the bears coming, it’s not like I was going to step on a bear anytime soon.
After La Sierra De La Giganta our odometer went a little faster, an average speed of 30km per hour and hauling water like mules, those 3days of hauling ass since Loreto definitely paid off once we arrived in La Paz. Sitting in the Ferry directed for Mazatlan and a week of rest was all we need.
With family in Mazatlan providing a free space to stay we are going to be busy. Readjusting our bikes for the next stretch, Lynne begging to line her wheel up, phone the embassies in the next countries to come and most important catch up on rest since... I guess you could say British Columbia.
We are so excited to arrive in Mazatlan with a real bed, for those who can’t sleep a 20hour can be a never ending ferry.
