September 14th 2006:

Nobody can stop us, not even a bee!!!

The mountains awaiting us in the United States seen from the ferry.

Another beautiful sight from the ferry
Two days only and we're already at the American border. The only thing left for us to do was get our vaccine in Victoria and catch the ferry for Port Angeles. However, the moment I opened my mouth to tell Lynne to turn left, a bee actually entered my mouth and went right down my throat. While trying to spit it back, she bit me several times on the lips. "I'll be fine, just give me a minute to put some ice on it!" I said to her confidently. However, my behavior changed drastically when my lip started swelling rather dramatically, my entire body started tingling and I started to feel pretty lightheaded. In the ambulance, I thought we'd have to delay our departure, but three hours later and a strong dose of Epipen later, I'm back on my bike. I was lucky to discover I was allergic to bee stings in a city near a hospital instead of on the road in the middle of nowhere. Now I need to make some space for an Epipen sirynge in my luggage... YAY!!!

With me in the hospital, Lynne had to find someone to transport my bike... However, I'm the only one strong enough to pull all of this he he he.
An ingenius system to warn that there are cyclist on a narrow road.
Even the US-Canadian borders managed to hold us up. Surprisingly, the fact that I had pepper spray and a knife in my front satchel didn't seem to worry them at all. However, the fact that we had apples was the crime of the century! Because of that, all of our luggage was thoroughly searched and we were questioned until our head spun like crazy. The most popular question: What's your name sir?

A beautiful cycle track near Victoria.
In any case, all of this doesn't really bother me. We already have 2496 km behind us and in two days we'll be in Oregon. After that it'll be California, meaning we won't wake up with the chilly fog but with scorching heat until we reach Peru.
