November 29 th, 2006:
The right place at the right time
Our friend Umberto who opened his house to us at the condition that we would wait for him the next day to pedal a little
You know when things seem impossible that’s when the solutions arise. We find ourselves with a timing jam. Lynne has to be in Costa Rica for December 15th and we have 2500km to cover and 5 countries to enter. We thought about taking the plane... that really doesn’t appeal to my way of life and taking the bus would be a huge headache... moving from bus to bus with our bikes and baggage.
When we arrived in Zihuatanejo we listened to our friend Umberto and we contacted his friends Basil and Alexandra. They organize one to two week long bike tours in Mexico. This has been their work for four years now... guiding groups of 10 or less to discover the hidden treasures of Mexico.
On this desert road alongside the Pacific ocean, there are more donkeys and horses than there are cars
View from the restaurant... Not bad at all huh!
It was obvious that the people who could help us out with information about traveling through Mexico were awaiting our arrival. Not only did they inform us about the upcoming roads but also put us in contact with a man named Paul, who is also a cyclist. Lucky enough he is looking for a partner to travel with through Central America by bicycle and I am a happy man. We also received an invitation to their home for a nice home-cooked meal. Wow... what a great dinner, definitely worth writing home about. Desert; fresh picked strawberries with maple syrup in a can from Quebec... I was in disarray for the entire meal... Thanks again Basil and Alexandra.
Everything is coming into place... Lynne is going to take the plane from Acapulco to San Jose in a couple of days and I leave by myself from Acupulco to Puerto Escondido to meet with Paul to begin our journey to Costa Rica to meet up with Lynne.
Here is Basil and Alexandra’s web site. If you are interested in biking in Mexico you are embarking on an unforgettable journey. Believe us when we say this: Mexico is made to bike tour, safer than Canada and the United States. Safe travels!
