VIH/Sida

VIH/Sida

I'm aware that I'm able to accomplish such a trip because I'm in excellent healty. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as I. This is why I'm asking you to help me raise funds for the Farha foundation and CECI in order to help them in their constant battle against HIV.

I ask different companies and individual to give me a certain amount for every kilometer I will roll. I can travel between 80 and 120 km a day in the best of conditions and my aim is between 40 000 and 60 000 km in two years. You can see my planned route here.

Quelques informations sur le Sida

AIDS in Quebec

Faits saillants

June 30th 2002...

Around 3.1 million people died of AIDS this year. This means around 8493 people a day, 353 per hour... 6 every minutes... one every 10 seconds.

And in 2003, 11 people will become HIV positive... every minute.

In Quebec...

  • There's around 20 000 HIV positive people
  • More than 6000 have AIDS
  • 30% of the people living with HIV are heterosexual
  • 1 out of 160 adult is infected
  • Quebec amounts for 50% of all the women and children cases of AIDS in all of Canada.
  • Around 1500 people will become HIV positive this year. This means 4 people a day... or one every six hours.

    New therapy?

  • Around 30 pills a day (sometimes even more)
  • Schedule and eating constraints
  • Severe side-effects and complications
  • Many people develop medication resistance
  • Nothing will cure AIDS

  • Reality

Isolation, exclusion, poverty: Those are a few of the daily realities of the numerous people living with AIDS. Isolement, exclusion et pauvreté : des réalités quotidiennes pour de nombreuses personnes vivant avec le VIH/sida.

Despite decades of education and prevention programs, the number of people living with AIDS keeps increasing each year.

    AIDS in other countries

We estimate to five million the number of new AIDS cases in 2004 in which 650 000 were children. In certain african countries like Bostwana and Swaziland, around 40% of the entire population lives with AIDS. Sub-saharian Africa is by far the place where the infection is the worst with some 25 million people infected on a total of 40 millions taken throughout the world.

These numbers are enough to make your head spin, but there are many ways to change things. Stopping the continuous  spread of AIDS is the goal of all ODM organizations and they try to mobilize the international community. CECI partners are particularly active in the fight against AIDS. They support many programs aiming to either reinforce communal associations, inform the people or network the activities of local health services with national health services.

This plague strikes more women and girls every day. In fact, close to half the people living with AIDS around the world are women. They are the ones whose numbers have increased the most dramatically throughout the years, so we must provide them with additional information and give them additional health services.

Because of its gravity, AIDS slows down progress and strikes the most active people of our societies. Prevention, education and accessibility are the three most effective means of fighting in the countries where we operate.
